Plenty of design trends are worth ignoring. These three earn their keep specifically because of where we live.
Indoor-outdoor living, done for this climate
Large sliding or multi-panel doors connecting the main living space to a shaded patio genuinely change how a Valley house is used for much of the year. The detail that decides whether it works is shade. Without proper overhang, screening or a ramada, a wall of west-facing glass turns the room into a greenhouse from May onwards. Get the shading strategy and the glazing specification right and this is the single best improvement available to most homes here.
Energy performance you can measure
Insulation, air sealing, duct integrity and window specification are unglamorous and they are where the money is. In a climate with our cooling load, addressing these while walls are already open is far cheaper than returning to them later, and the comfort difference is immediate.
Materials that suit the desert
Warm neutrals, plaster and stucco textures, natural stone, timber and matte metals sit correctly in this landscape and age well in this light. They also tend to date more slowly than whatever finish is currently everywhere, which matters if you intend to stay.
What to be careful with
Anything highly reflective near west glass, dark exterior finishes on large sun-facing surfaces, and delicate textiles in rooms with strong afternoon light. All three look excellent in photographs taken elsewhere.
